It's a france production, but it is set in Xapatan (Mexico).
The show is presented by Sophie Davant and she has a jeep and knows the way to a grot. A female contestant searches for 20 statues (every statue has a gem). The gods have build that statues and because the female contestant wants to "rob" one statue, the gods got angry and want to obstruct her passage (but doesn't succeed, the female contestant arrives the grot)
At Xapatan station the professor gives the 7 seven male contestants a code with 6 signs, but the men don't know the meaning of the signs. The signs say what statue the proffesor needs. Sophie has a disc and during the way to the grot there are three stones which signs (like the ones on the sheet of paper with the code). By using the disc, they can get to know what the signs mean.
Unfortunatelly there are different barriers on the way to the grot (for example broken bridges, holes on the streets and other barricades caused by gods). Sophie explains what to do and the men have to clear that little games.
Normally they have to fight against masked warriors, the Xapatan guardians (who don't want the contestants to arrive the grot), but in some games there are cavaliers and women (Amazons). The cavaliers try to rope the contestants so the women can fetch a black case, which every male contestant has on his back. If they loose that black case, they are out.
If the contestants don't manage to clear the trail, Sophie has to make a detour - she has to drive through the area of the black cavalier. There is another barricade, but just one contestant has to fight against the black cavalier (normally the contestant loses his black case).
At the end of the trail the remaining male contestants have to walk through the forest to find the entrance of the grot. Just one male can go through the door.
That man has to chose - together with the woman - the right statue. Then they must use a funicular (in the black case is a belt they have to use) to get back to the station. If the funicular stops, they have to climb down (and perhaps, they have to swim through a lake) and walk upstairs to the station (it's a long way!).
If they reach the station the professor says if the statue is the one he searched for. If he searched for the statue, they get the maximal price: 100.000 Franc. If it's broken, they get less money. (70.000 Franc if just little parts are missing and 50.000 Franc if it is broken through). If they have chosen the wrong statue, they will get 20.000 Franc because the professor can sell the gem.
But there is another important factor: the professor is busy and has to take the next train. So the contestants just have about an hour (or some minutes more) to get back - if time is up, the professor leaves Xapatan, but a resident will give them 10.000 Fr for the gem.
(Perhaps they used the curency of Xapatan, I don't remember, sorry)

Sounds intriguing. Pity I don't have satellite TV or anything that alolows me to watch French channels. I like adventure gameshows.
Thanks for the explanation. Must have taken you a long time to type. Enjoy a Karma point!

Xapatan was also show on DSF from 2000 - about beginning of 2002. I also liked that show. I think the commentator was also Armin Berger.
